Curriculum Vision
Making Progress
At Chapel St Leonard’s, our curriculum is carefully sequenced and spiral in design to ensure that skills and knowledge are built upon year after year. Domain-specific skills are explicitly taught and practiced in a focused manner, without forcing superficial curriculum links. Learning outcomes at the end of each unit clearly demonstrate the progress pupils have made.
Deepening Concepts
We identify and revisit key substantive concepts in relevant subjects to deepen understanding over time. Teachers make deliberate links to prior learning to build upon what children already know. These concepts are explicitly discussed, referenced in class quizzes, and embedded in classroom discussions.
Retrieval Practice
Children engage in regular retrieval activities, including low-stakes quizzes, to strengthen long-term memory. Our curriculum is designed so that learning opportunities support future application. Remembering knowledge is a celebrated part of our school culture.
Enrichment
We enrich the curriculum with exciting and meaningful experiences. From visits and visitors to themed events and cross-curricular activities, we aim to create awe and wonder in the classroom. We celebrate learning, diversity, and achievement throughout the year.
Curriculum Drivers at Chapel St Leonard’s
Through our curriculum, we aim for children to:
• Develop a love for life, learning, and each other.
• Be respectful to everyone, including those with different backgrounds, cultures, beliefs, and identities.
• Persevere through challenges and develop a resilient approach to learning.
• Grow into responsible, honest citizens who contribute positively to society.
Knowledge-Rich Curriculum
Our curriculum prioritises powerful, subject-specific knowledge. Units are designed to give children a deep understanding of key concepts. Teachers have strong subject knowledge, which they continually develop to ensure high-quality teaching across the curriculum.
Support for All
All children receive high-quality teaching tailored to their needs. Small-step instruction, clear modelling, scaffolding, and structured support enable all pupils to access the curriculum, succeed, and gain confidence. Children with additional needs are supported through high expectations and inclusive practice.
Text-Focused Approach
Reading is central to our curriculum. Children read widely across subjects to build knowledge and deepen understanding. Class texts are often linked to curriculum topics, and teachers model fluent, expressive reading to inspire a love of books and vocabulary-rich learning environments.
